Maine Farmland Trust created its gallery to celebrate art in agriculture, and to inspire and inform the public. Maine Farmland Trust is a statewide non-profit organization working to permanently preserve and protect Maine’s agricultural lands, and to keep Maine’s farms farming.

Maine Farmland Trust is a statewide organization that protects farmland, supports farmers, and advances farming. Our goal is not just to protect Maine farmland, but to revitalize Maine’s rural landscape by keeping agricultural lands working and helping farmers, and their communities, thrive. We also work closely with dozens of other partners, including statewide groups, local and regional land trusts, and municipalities. 178 farm links, many with promising beginning farmers who will continue to feed Maine’s people and rural economy. 832 farm families supported with direct services, helping them grow strong businesses and develop new markets. You can help MFT continue to grow this critical work. Protecting farmland is the only way we will ensure that we have enough land to grow our food in the future. In the next decade, we expect that as many as 400,000 acres of Maine farmland will change hands as farmers age and retire. Connecting landowners with incoming farmers helps keep this land in production, whether through a sale, lease arrangement, or other support of a farmer’s land search. To revitalize Maine’s rural communities, we must help farmers thrive and help more Mainers access local food. Collaborating and consulting with farmers, food-related businesses, and organizations with interests that range from economic development to food security, we help grow creative programs and enterprises designed to support a vibrant and resilient food system that works for all Mainers. For local food and farms to flourish, we need an informed and dedicated community of people who are passionate about Maine farms. Events, films, books, art, and public advocacy all help advance farming’s future. Though farming in Maine is growing, continued growth will depend on what happens next. Beyond this, we need to revitalize once-farmed land to raise food again. The future of our environment, economy, and food security demand our full commitment. The best strategy to keep land affordable is to permanently protect it through an agricultural easement, so that the land will be forever available at its value as farmland, not as potential development. MFT is the only statewide organization dedicated to protecting farmland, and is a national leader in farmland protection and farmland access work. Since its founding, MFT has expanded its program areas to not only protect Maine farmland, but increase farm viability by helping farmers thrive, and raising public awareness about the important role farms play in our communities.
